18/08/17 - The Vikings (1958) comes to Blu-ray

news picEureka Entertainment to release The Vikings, Richard Fleischer’s rip-roaring action adventure on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK on 16 October.

One of the most spectacular and action packed epics of the fifties, Richard Fleischer’s The Vikings wowed audiences worldwide with its stunning visuals, brutal action and star studded cast.

Prince Einar (Kirk Douglas) is the son and heir of a savage Viking chieftain (Ernest Borgnine). Prince Eric (Tony Curtis) is his unknowing half-brother, the bastard offspring of Einar’s father and an English queen. When the Vikings kidnap the princess Morgana (Janet Leigh), her beauty inflames the desires of both men, forcing a bloody duel that decides their fate… and the future of the English throne.

Filmed in vivid Technicolor by the legendary Jack Cardiff (The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus) and narrated by Orson Welles, The Vikings spawned a whole sub-genre of imitators, (Mario Bava alone helmed Erik The Conqueror, The Last of the Vikings and Knives of the Avenger in the years following the film’s release) but none quite topped the glorious spectacle from one of America’s greatest directors of genre cinema, Richard Fleischer.

16/08/17 - Godzilla FAQ book is coming...

news picApplause Theatre & Cinema Books is to publish Godzilla FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the King of the Monsters.

He is the Lizard King – well, the King of the Monsters – he can do anything.

Since he first romped onto the silver screen in 1954, no other character in all of international cinema has been as beloved by American audiences as Godzilla.

Despite the modern film industry's affinity for franchises and cinematic universes, he remains one of its most enduring and popular characters, with a total of twenty-eight motion pictures (not even including two American reboots!) under his massive belt.

From his home base in Japan, where the legendary Toho Pictures first put him on the map, Godzilla has gone on to become an international phenomenon, a pop culture avatar, a movie monster unrivaled in both size and appeal.

The latest installment in Applause Theatre and Cinema Books' FAQ series, Brian Soloman's Godzilla FAQ is a broad and varied exploration of the monumental, fire-breathing radioactive lizard that has roared his way into our hearts over a sixty-year reign of terror.

By pairing a colloquial text with a wide array of illustrations and visual media, this 400-page survey encourages readers to drop in and out of the book, as every chapter serves as a self-supporting article on a given subject. Written by a lifelong Godzilla fan and pop culture critic, Godzilla FAQ offers a comprehensive rundown of every Godzilla film ever made, in-depth biographies of major players in the franchise's history, and enough raw information to rebuild a ravaged Tokyo.

15/08/17 - The Party comes to Blu-ray

news picEureka Entertainment to release The Party, Blake Edwards’ fish-out-of-water, comedy cult classic starring Peter Sellers, as part of the Eureka Classics range on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK on 16 October.

With the massive success of Breakfast at Tiffanys and The Pink Panther cementing his reputation as one of America’s finest directors of comedic cinema, Blake Edwards followed them up with The Party, arguably his greatest film, and at the time one of the most experimental films ever produced by a Hollywood studio.

By a twist of fate, the clumsy but good-hearted, aspiring actor Hrundi V. Bakshi (Peter Sellers) is invited to attend Fred "General" Clutterbuck's big party, after having utterly ruined the set of his latest feature film. In this cozy and friendly atmosphere, drinks are flowing, food is in abundance and everybody is in high spirits. But when Bakshi accidentally has his first-ever sip of alcohol and his real identity is finally revealed; only God knows how this party is going to end up.

Serving as a series of set pieces for Seller’s improvisational comedy talents, The Party developed a reputation over the years as a “cult film”, but is now highly regarded as one of the best comedies of its era.

14/08/17 - Tamed to be published in October

news picHutchinson is to publish Alice Roberts's Tamed: Ten Species That Changed Our World on 19 October.

For hundreds of thousands of years, our ancestors depended on wild plants and animals for survival. They were hunter-gatherers – consummate experts – but taking the world as they found it. Then the Neolithic revolution happened, in different times in different places, and across the globe these hunter-gatherers changed their interaction with other species in a crucial way: they began to tame them. And the human population boomed; civilization began.

Tamed is an epic story, encompassing hundreds of thousands of years of history, archeology, biology, anthropology, paleontology and genetics, but also a deeply personal one. By uncovering the amazing and strange deep history of familiar species – dogs; wheat; cattle; potatoes; chickens; rice; maize and horses – Dr Alice Roberts not only reveals how becoming part of our world changed those plants and animals, but just how important those plants and animals were, and are, to the survival and success of our own species.

Enlightening, wide-ranging and endlessly fascinating, Dr Alice Roberts’s new book reveals the enormous power, and responsibility, of taming our world.

07/08/17 - Vinyl release for classic scores

News image

Varèse Sarabande is releasing three vinyl packages exclusive to Barnes & Noble on 11 August: Unforgiven (1992); Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) and Saban's Power Rangers (2017).

Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Picture in 1992, Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven is considered one of the best Western films of all time. Lennie Niehaus's powerful score helps tells the story about Old West gunslingers in a small Wyoming town. Re-issued in timing with the 25th anniversary of the film's release, this LP is presented on ‘prairie sand’ coloured vinyl and is limited to 1000 units.

Newly re-mastered, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the return of a classic, complete with original artwork and new photos. Written by The Sherman Brothers with a cast which included Dick Van Dyke, the famous songwriters put it thusly when asked about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ; “Mary Poppins was the most successful thing we ever did (it earned them a fortune and two Oscars). This is better. We’re much more pleased with our music for Chitty.” A must have for fans of '60s era musicals!

Released earlier this year, Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers. Available on red, pink, blue and black vinyl (through other retailers), this Yellow Ranger vinyl is sure to become a collectable (limited to 500 units).

07/08/17 - Annabelle: Creation soundtrack

news picWaterTower Music releases the soundtrack to New Line Cinema’s Annabelle: Creation - the follow up to 2014’s hugely successful film Annabelle.

Benjamin Wallfisch (upcoming IT, A Cure For Wellness, Lights Out) is recognized as one of the leading film composers of his generation. His masterfully unnerving 24-track Annabelle: Creation film score offers a potent dimension of eeriness that magnifies the suspenseful discomfort when set against picture.

“It’s always a joy to collaborate with David F. Sandberg; not only is he of course a master filmmaker, but he’s also a great musician,” says Wallfisch about the Annabelle: Creation director. "His deep understanding of what a score can bring to the table in such a finely nuanced, beautifully crafted piece of cinema as Annabelle: Creation, gave me a lot of freedom to think outside the box.

“Our only rule was everything in the score had to be acoustic; as the drama is set in the 1950s, everything needed to feel authentic to the time. As a supplement to the large orchestra we used on the score, we utilized a whole bunch of dusty toy instruments from the 1950s, with one in particular appearing more than any other - a seemingly innocent sounding Jaymar toy piano. Just the kind of instrument you might catch Annabelle herself playing…”
