20/01/17 - Two Rode Together comes to Blu-ray

news picEureka Entertainment is to release Two Rode Together, in a special Blu-ray/DVD dual format edition on 13 March.

The first collaboration between James Stewart and director John Ford produced this thrilling and darkly complex Western that easily ranks among Ford’s best work, yet remains one of his most overlooked.

Stewart plays gloriously against type as Marshal Guthrie McCabe, a cynical and amoral U.S. Marshal assigned to trade guns with the fearsome Comanche in exchange for hostages, with the promise of a large reward if he is successful.

McCabe and old friend Lieutenant Jim Gary (Richard Widmark, Pickup on South St, Kiss of Death) set out to track down the Comanche and their captives, with tragic consequences for all involved.

With a screenplay by Frank Nugent (The Searchers) and cinematography by Charles Lawton Jr. (The Lady from Shanghai, 3:10 to Yuma), Two Rode Together was one of the first Westerns to recognize the dignity and value of the Native American way of life and the Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK in a special Dual Format edition.

19/01/17 - Sherlock Series 4 soundtrack

news picSilva Screen Records will release David Arnold and Michael Price's score for the fourth series of Sherlock on 27 January.

Inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock Series 4 started broadcasting on New Year’s Day with The Six Thatchers, a heartbreaking and hilarious opening episode which spins the show into new, darker territory. The Six Thatchers was followed by the Lying Detective on 08 January and The Final Problem on 15 January.

Well established composer partnership, Arnold and Price work on Sherlock scores remotely, playing pieces of music down the phone. They both have favourite bits but will never reveal who did what. Price tends to be the more earnest and sentimental one whilst Arnold excels on big dramatic cues. Arnold and Price’s music for the previous series received BAFTA and Emmy nominations and won an RTS Television Award.

16/01/17 - Unlucky For Some horror anthology

news picTy Power has published his new book, Unlucky For Some: Tales of Horror & the Supernatural.

Horror is not just our dark side, it’s our psyche. Our minds play tricks on us; it looks for faces and humanoid shapes in the darkness, where there are none. Less is more, both in fiction writing and on film, for this very reason. The mind cranks up the tension and unseen imagery to a point where it will scare you the most; which is why when the ‘nature of the beast’ is realised, it loses most of its power to frighten.

Fear of the unknown is infinitely greater than fear of something real and specific. So, keep to the shadows and you won’t be disappointed… as you’ll find out in more than one of the following stories.

Among the tales on display here we investigate: A man who has spent years hidden in the darkness; What happens when the body's defences are low and your inhibitions come out to play; A man's gift to his pregnant wife which takes on a life of its own; Someone who has been plagued by catastrophic bad luck his entire life; Whether innocents can suffer the sins of the father; A man who dreads being an organ donor, with just cause; A father and son's startling discovery on a deep sea diving expedition; and A new tenant's unhealthy interest in a building's dark past.

news picWarner Home Video is to release The Infiltrator on Blu-ray and DVD on 23 January.

Amidst the lavish excess of the 1980s, Robert Musella became a pivotal player for drug lords cleaning their dirty cash. He traded on mob connections, to become the confidant to scores of the international underworld and the bankers who enabled them.

However, Robert Musella was, in fact, the undercover persona of Special Agent Robert Mazur: a US customs official who went further than any before him. Laying his life on the line, he infiltrated the globe’s largest cartels and discovered just how deep into society their influence extended.

Welcomed into an inner-circle of violence and corruption, Mazur found himself in the tight embrace of those he had promised to take down.

Based on the true story of a fearless undercover agent, The Infiltrator is a heart-stopping account of one of history’s most elaborate stings. The operation reeled in key players in a chain stretching all the way to Escobar. Their arrests would lead to the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International and shake the black economy to its core.

04/01/17 - Lowly release new album Heba

news picBella Union is to release Danish band Lowly's new album Heba on 10 February.

As remarkable as their music is, Lowly only came together as a band in 2014, having met at the musical academy in Aarhus, Denmark. Despite all five members being involved in different studies, and having their own pre-existing endeavours, Nanna Schannong (lead vocals, guitar), Soffie Viemose (lead vocals, laptop), Kasper Staub (synthesisers), Thomas Lund (bass, Moog) and Steffen Lundtoft (drums, percussion) soon found common musical ground; a restlessly inventive and exquisitely melodic sound that refutes easy categorization.

The band themselves call it “noise-pop, and everything in between”. In this case ‘noise’, explains Kasper Staub, refers to the textures and treatments via laptop and guitar. This gives Lowly songs unpredictable, shape-shifting qualities (brilliantly layered by the band and co-producer Anders Boll, Efterklang’s long-trusted engineer/soundman), though a core of wistful melancholy remains, further intensified by the enigmatic lyrics. “We think of our music and lyrics more like a painting, we think it should all melt together,” says Staub. “We’re all interested in developing ourselves as songwriters, and working in new ways, with different ideas.”

Vacillating between vintage and modern, emotion and energy and heart and soul, Lowly are a fresh band breathing a timeless life into the modern realm of indie music. This early on, it suggests that the potential for this standout act is limitless.

03/01/17 - Beachhead release debut album

news picFysisk Format is to release Beachheads's debut self titled album on 03 February.

Beachheads, a new band formed by two members of the brilliant Kverlertak. Very different from the parent band, the focus is more squarely on melody here. 'Your Highness', one stand out of many, is heavily inspired by the likes of Husker Du and 'Moment Of Truth' shares far more in common with Teenage Fanclub than the heavy rock that inspired Kverlertak.

The spark that became Beachheads was first ignited on a tour bus, as Kvelertak members Vidar (guitar) and Marvin (bass) fantasized about the endless potential of fuzzy guitars, energetic drums and strong melodies. The two hard-working Kvelertak musicians had little time off, and Beachheads endured as more of a dream for their days off, rather than the real band they wished for.

After a demo session a couple of years back they hooked up with Stavanger-locals Espen, a metal drummer with a pop heart, and former synth-pop-singer Børild. Together they knocked out three single tracks that quickly made a mark on playlists on both Norwegian and British national radio. The sudden success and interest came as a surprise for Beachheads who had no big plans, except for “maybe recording an album sometime”.
